David and Stephanie September 2009

Considering an October trip up to the Johnson City, TN area for some Ministry Partner Development (our lingo for support raising).  I’ll be in need of a place(s) to stay [maybe 10/13 – 10/20], car to borrow with good mileage to visit everyone possible.  Pray that God will meet those needs, and that we can gain some new ministry partners.

Kids’ picture included with the attached stories here. . .

Steve and Alberta May 2009

Dear Family & Friends,

Attached here is our report from the week of conference and celebration of Bethany’s 25 years of ministry in Isabela. We had a great time of fellowship with the Bethany pastors and their families from Mindoro as well. Thanks again for your prayers and support - not only of this particular occasion - but of the many challenges we have faced throughout our twenty years here in the Philippines together.

Blessings, Steve & Alberta

Sorry, last week was Spring Break.  Enjoy the attached report of the Polish premier of Magdalena:  Released From Shame.

And I just learned that New York Times best-selling author Joel C. Rosenberg mentions the key role of the JESUS film in Middle East history in his March 27 Weblog.  Here is a link:

Good news from Asia

Dear Family and Friends,

With so much bleak news circulating in the world - how about some good news for a change!

It was the summer of 1981 or 1982. I (Steve) was a student at Bethany working full days during the summer as supervisor on the lawn crew. With 60 acres to groom we needed a good size crew to get the job done. Some of the kids of the Bethany staff had mandatory work hours so we got our “allotment” of staff kids in the maintenance crew.

Two of these teenagers had been, unbeknownst to me, goofing off most of the morning instead of getting their mowing jobs done! Since it was such a hot muggy day, I decided to take them cold soft drinks. As I approached in my little maintenance cart Jim and Dan tried to look busy but were scared I would chew them out for goofing off. Instead, they each got an ice cold drink as a reward (could this be a modern day application of the verse that says we are to “heap colds (drinks) on their heads?) for their shenanigans and I was on my way.

Jim used this story as an illustration in a sermon he preached on not getting what we deserve while he was a student at Bethany College of Missions. He went on to become a teacher and principal of a Christian school. Jim, his wife Tammy and their six children are now living in China, reaching out to special needs orphans in hopes that they can have a better life. Here is some more good news just in from Jim & Tammy.

Dear Friends and Family,

Yesterday we sent you a copy of our latest newsletter. In it we featured Joel, the little autistic boy who has been living with us for about a month (as a foster child). We wrote about how his minor strides forward paled in comparison to the overwhelming sense of despair that seemed to engulf him. In fact, in the whole time he has been in our house, he hasn’t even cracked a hint of a smile.

But that all changed this evening. Today we witnessed a dramatic miracle that we wanted to relay to all of you.

When we got up this morning, Joel was angrier and more difficult than ever before. We were beside ourselves. As the day wore on, he seemed to get no better. We were especially disappointed because we had decided to make today Joel’s birthday, and we wanted to celebrate with him. The kids got him a birthday present, and mom made a cheesecake. But Joel looked at us through dark and cloudy eyes.

As we sat down to dinner, we thanked our Father for His goodness and mercy, and we asked specifically for a miracle to take place in Joel’s life. We all started eating, and chatting and then I glanced over at Joel. He was giggling and had a grand smile on his face. It got our attention, and we all stopped eating to watch him smiling and laughing for no apparent reason. When we finished eating, we took him out of his highchair and set him loose in the living room. He started running, jumping, giggling and chasing with the kids. Please know that this transformation took place instantly.

As we watched him, we knew that something marvelous was taking place. Joel was coming alive! We immediately thanked our Father for moving in on Joel. It was a miracle like none I’ve ever seen.

And now we want to thank all of you who began pr ayng for Joel after reading his little story. We are rejoicing and we want all of you to rejoice with us. Please don’t stop praying

Joel’s picture is attached showing him smiling probably for the first time in over a year.

HE is alive!
